Annual IPL jamboree kicks off on Tuesday

Annual IPL jamboree kicks off on Tuesday (© PTI)

Dogged by myriad controversies but glamorous nonetheless, the sixth edition of the Indian Premier League will kick off on Tuesday with what promises to be a glitzy opening ceremony featuring Bollywood stars and international rapper Pitbull.

Flying drummers, Chinese percussionists, fireworks, and some of the biggest film stars in the country, including Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif, will perform at the ceremony at the Salt Lake Stadium.

Never before in cricket has any private tournament been as successful as the IPL and it is expected to be a rollicking affair once again when the nine franchises lock horns for the coveted title.

The Shah Rukh Khan-owned Kolkata Knight Riders, the defending champions, have earned the right to host the opening ceremony.

KKR will also host the IPL opener, on Wednesday, when they take on Delhi Daredevils at the Eden Gardens that will also witness the summit clash on May 26.

Sunrisers Hyderabad will make their debut replacing Deccan Chargers, terminated by the IPL Governing Council following a breach of contract.

Known for controversies, the upcoming IPL has already made headlines for all the wrong reasons following Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalitha's ban on Sri Lankan players' involvement in the Chennai leg of the tournament.

Jayalalitha, in a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, refused to host the Lankans in view of the growing political tensions, stemming from the treatment of ethnic Tamils in Sri Lanka.

Bowing to the intense political pressure, the IPL GC asked the 13 Lankan players, three of them franchise captains, not to play in Chennai that will host 10 matches, including two eliminators.

Pawan Kalyan to produce Gabbar Singh 2

Pawan Kalyan Ready With Gabbar Singh-2
Pawan Kalyan has decided to turn producer.! The superstar will be producing the sequel to his blockbuster — Gabbar Singh (the official Telugu remake of the Salman-starrer Dabangg) — under his own banner, which he plans to launch with this film. Sources close to the actor say thatPawan Kalyan has decided to rejig the entire cast and crew for the film and plans to rope in a fresh team on board for the sequel. Harish Shankar, the director who wielded the megaphone for Gabbar Singh, might not direct the sequel due to his current commitments. Buzz also has it thatGabbar Singh 2 will not be a remake of Dabangg 2, but an original creation from Pawan Kalyan's production house.

A source close to the production unit, tells us, "Pawan Kalyan always wanted to play a character called Gabbar Singh. He even sported a similar Khaki-clad, irreverent cop avatar in the introductory scene of Gudumbar Shankar (2004). And when Salman's Dabangg released, Pawan decided to blend his idea of Gabbar Singh with Dabangg style. He created his own mannerisms and style for the official remake, which went on to become a box office hit. And now, he wants to recreate that magic in Gabbar Singh 2," says the source, adding that Pawan Kalyan will take the final call about the director, heroine and other cast and crew after finalising the script, which is being worked upon now.

Interestingly, Pawan Kalyan wanted to produce the first Gabbar Singh film too and had in fact, released the film's first look poster under his banner's name. However, things took a different turn and Bandla Ganesh, who made Teenmaar with Pawan, ended up producing the film.

Nagarjuna Is Still 'Greeku Veerudu'

Many senior heroes are suffering a downfall of business now. Buyers are not showing any faith on many heroes as they have shown till a few years back. The producers those are ready to take risk on young heroes are keeping big heroes at bay. But Nagarjuna proved that things will work if planned the project as per market value of the hero and business range.

His earlier films Rajanna and Damarukam were cost failures. Over budget kept the film 'Damarukam' in troubles. Hence Nagarjuna is perfectly advising his producers to plan as per his market value.

Sources say that Greeku Veerudu was made with a budget of Rs 18 Cr. While this amount returned back in the form of theatrical distribution rights, producer got profits in the form of satellite rights. Kamakshi Movies Siva Prasad Reddy who is close friend of Nagarjuna is lauding his friend for making this happen.

Tamanna Himmatwala

Himmatwala

Himmatwala
Cast: Ajay Devgn, Tamannaah, Paresh Rawal, Mahesh Manjrekar, Zarina Wahab
Direction: Sajid Khan
Rating:

Due credit first, to Sajid Khan for honesty. Note how the posters describe Himmatwala as A Sajid Khan Entertainer. Nowhere do they specify it is a 'film'. Entertainment, unlike film, is a variable asset, Sajid would perhaps argue. One person’s entertainment can be another's headache.

A review of Himmatwala is redundant. If you hate Sajid's brand of entertainment you won't waste time over analysis, chances are you won’t read the review anyway. If you love this kind of bawdy circus you don't care what a review says, chances are you don't read reviews anyway.

Sajid directs bad films that make good money. His cinema so far has revealed no ambition at improving or reimagining mainstream rules. Quite apt that his latest should be a remake of a potboiler hit of the eighties, a decade most regard as creatively the worst for Hindi cinema.

Himmatwala 2013 retains every bit of the tacky swagger that worked 30 years ago, raising a pertinent question. If this remake turns out to be a hit as Sajid has pompously predicted, has Hindi commercial cinema really not moved anywhere in three decades?

To refresh the 'story', Ajay plays Ravi, son of a poor woman (Zarina Wahab) who raises the boy to avenge the wrongs on their family. There is the evil landlord (Mahesh Manjrekar) behind the brutality, to justify the hero's action quota. And there is the landlord's spoilt daughter (Tamanaah), to justify his naach-gaana and crude comic bursts.
